SECTOR SCAN SONAR
The archaeologist’s ability to survey acoustically known underwater sites takes a significant step forward with the deployment of the sector scan sonar; a device that is easy to deploy and provides metrically accurate data comparable to terrestrial 3D laser scanning.
Traditional sonar is a towed array, making it difficult to relocate over a known point. The sector scan sonar is dropped into position over a fixed location, and gathers data in a 360° environment; working effectively in all water conditions, with accuracies to +/- 50mm. ADCO has used the device to survey shipwrecks, fishtraps and crannogs, with breathtaking results. The sector-scan sonar is a cost effective method for delivering highly accurate underwater survey data.
To facilitate detailed survey of known submerged sites, such as shipwrecks, quays and fishtraps, ADCO recommends the use of the sector-scan sonar. This easy to deploy device provides metrically accurate data comparable to terrestrial 3D laser scanning. The gathered data can also be merged with data captured from above the waterline.
